What is a random task generator?

A random task generator picks a task for you at random from a list. Use it to decide what to work on next, or to hand out tasks to a group without arguments about who does what.

How do I get a random task?

Choose a preset list or type your own tasks, one per line, then press “Give me a random task”. Press it again for a different one.

How do I split tasks between several people?

Switch to “Split between people”, enter the names and the tasks, and press “Split tasks randomly”. Tasks are shuffled and dealt out in turn, so everyone gets the same number (or one more or fewer when the tasks do not divide evenly).

Is the random task picker fair?

Yes. It uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every task and every person is equally likely to come up.

Do I need to sign up?

No. The tool is free, works instantly and keeps your lists in your browser only.

What is the difference between this and the Random Assigner?

The Random Assigner pairs each person with one item. The Random Task Generator is built for picking a single task or dealing many tasks to each person, which suits chores and to-do lists.

What it’s good for

Beat decision fatigue

When your to-do list is long and nothing feels urgent, let chance pick the next step. Add your tasks, press the button and start the one it picks — no more spending ten minutes deciding what to do first.

Split chores fairly

Add everyone’s name and every chore, then deal them out. Tasks are shuffled and handed round-robin, so nobody ends up with a much bigger share and no one can claim you played favourites.

Classrooms and teams

Teachers and team leads can assign practice questions, presentation topics or sprint chores in seconds, then re-shuffle if the group wants a different split.

About the Random Task Generator

The Random Task Generator is a free browser tool with two modes. “Pick one” chooses a single random task from your list — or from a ready-made set of household, study, work and fun tasks — so you can stop deliberating and start doing. “Split between people” shuffles your tasks and deals them out round-robin to the names you enter, which keeps workloads even. Everything runs in your browser with a cryptographically secure shuffle; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. If you want to pair each person with exactly one item instead, try the Random Assigner.

Need to pair each person with exactly one item or gift? Try the Random Assigner, or give everyone a part with the Random Role Generator.
