What is a random name picker?

A random name picker chooses one or more names from a list at random, so the result is fair and nobody can argue it was chosen on purpose. People use it for classrooms, giveaways, raffles, team stand-ups and deciding who goes first.

How do I pick a random name from a list?

Type or paste your names, one per line, then press Spin. The wheel lands on one name at random. For long lists, or to pick several winners, use Quick draw.

Is the random name picker fair?

Yes. Every name has an equal chance. It uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, and a name that has already won is only removed if you turn on that option.

How do I stop the same name being picked twice?

Turn on “Remove winner after each pick”. Each winner is taken off the list, so you can draw again until everyone has had a turn. This is the no-repeat mode teachers use to call on every student.

Can I pick more than one winner?

Yes. Choose 2, 3, 5 or 10 winners and press Draw. You get that many different names, which is ideal for raffles and giveaways with several prizes.

Can I use it for a classroom?

Yes. Paste your class list, use Remove winner after each pick so every student gets a turn, and put the page on your projector. It also splits the class into random teams.

Can I pick a winner for an Instagram or Facebook giveaway?

Yes. Copy the commenter names into the list, one per line, and draw. This page cannot read your social accounts, so you paste the names yourself. Remember to follow the giveaway rules of the platform you use.

How many names can I add?

Up to 500 names. The wheel shows up to 24 names clearly. Above that, Quick draw picks from the whole list.

Can I split names into teams?

Yes. Use Make teams, choose how many teams you want and the names are shuffled into even groups.

Can I use it for Secret Santa or a gift exchange?

For pairing each person with exactly one other person, use the Secret Santa generator. To decide the order of turns in a gift swap, use the White Elephant generator.

What happens to duplicate names?

Names that appear twice are counted once, ignoring capital letters, so nobody gets double the chance by accident. The page tells you how many duplicates it ignored.

Is it free? Are my names saved or sent anywhere?

It is free with no sign-up. Your list stays in your browser, and it is only remembered on your own device so you do not have to retype it.
